Finish Time Calculator

Work out your race finish time from a target pace and distance, with km and mile support.

Pace per mile

At this pace you cover 10.91 km every hour.

The finish time calculator answers a simple planning question: if I hold this pace, when do I cross the line? Pick a distance from the presets or type your own, set the pace you plan to run, and read the projected finish in hours, minutes and seconds. It is the tool to reach for when you already know the effort you can sustain and want to see what it adds up to over 5K, 10K, a half marathon, a marathon, or any custom distance.

The math behind it

Finish time equals pace multiplied by distance. Because pace is stored internally as seconds per kilometre, the calculator converts a min/mile pace to min/km first, using the exact factor of 1.609344 kilometres per mile, so switching units never changes the answer. A steady 4:30 min/km over 21.0975 km, for instance, works out to roughly 1:34:56. That precision matters most in the marathon, where being ten seconds per kilometre off pace shifts your finish by more than seven minutes.

Turning a goal into a plan

A finish time on its own is a target, not a plan. Once you have the number you want, move on to the splits calculator to break it into kilometre or mile segments, so you know exactly what your watch should read at each marker. If you are not yet sure what pace is realistic, start from a recent result in the race time predictor, which uses Riegel's formula to estimate an equivalent time. To explore the relationship between pace, time and distance more freely, the main pace calculator lets you solve for any of the three.

Pacing tips

Runners commonly start too fast and pay for it late. A safer approach is to bank nothing early, settle into goal pace within the first kilometre, and aim to finish feeling like you had one more gear. The predicted finish here assumes even pacing, which for most runners is the most efficient way to race a personal best.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a race finish time?

Multiply your target pace by the race distance. For example, 5:00 min/km over 10 km gives a 50:00 finish. This calculator does the multiplication and shows the result in hours, minutes and seconds.

What finish time is 5:00 min/km over a marathon?

A marathon is 42.195 km, so 5:00 min/km predicts about 3:30:59. Small pace changes add up over the distance, which is why goal pacing matters so much in longer races.

Can I enter pace in min/mile?

Yes. Switch the pace unit to min/mile and the distance unit to whatever you prefer. The calculator converts internally, so mixing units still gives a correct answer.

Does it account for hills or fatigue?

No. It assumes you hold the chosen pace evenly for the whole distance. For a fade-adjusted estimate from a real result, use the race time predictor instead.
